Key stuck in the ignition? Here is what to do.
If you are a driver and once had your car keys stuck in the ignition, you know how stressful the situation is. It is even more stressful if you are in hurry, you cannot just leave your car there because of the high risk that someone will steal it. There are a few things you can do however, before you truly get worried about your situation.
Tips on removing car keys stuck in ignition
Check the position. Before anything else you should find out if your key is in the “off position”. You will make things worse if you turn the key much far. This can be told if you can still play your radio but the car is off and cannot remove the keys. Also find out if the car is in park, automatic cars will never allow you remove the keys if the car is any other position than the park.
Jiggle the wheel. The second step is trying to gently move your car wheel back and forth as you try to remove the key. Sometimes the wheel turn off the ignition, so turning it may help you remove the keys.
Check the battery. If the battery is dead, it may lead to the key getting stuck in the ignition. This however depends on the type of the car. If this happens to be the case, do not try to remove the key unless the battery is partially charged.
Use a bobby pin. If all the above options have failed you, you can now get creative with household items. Pulling out the key using a pliers might work at times but never try to overturn it side by side as it will lead to breaking it hence more problems. If you might have a bobby pin in your car or something similar, take off the small cap that is covering the access port to the ignition lock override, then press it lightly using the pin.
Try to loosen it. Using things like silicon spray or electrical lube loosen the key this maybe the solution to getting your key out. While doing this be very careful that the key does not break in the ignition.
If all the above tricks have not worked, then I have one more solution that will never fail you.
